Skövde Energi and OneCo upgrade the electricity network in Skövde

To ensure a stable and reliable electricity network in Skövde, the city's 130 kV substation needed to be modernised. On behalf of Skövde Energi, OneCo was responsible for dismantling parts of the old switchgear and building a new one with modern high-voltage equipment.

The original station in Skövde, built in 1973, was in dire need of upgrading due to outdated equipment. To ensure continued reliable energy distribution in the area, OneCo installed new high-voltage components on the existing concrete foundations. At the same time, safety was improved by introducing more back-up systems to guarantee operation in the event of disruptions.

- "Everything went according to plan and we are very satisfied. The co-operation worked well and everyone was keen for the result to be good for us as a customer," says Henrik Larsson, who is responsible for electricity network operations at Skövde Energy.

The project involved OneCo's switchgear experts, who were responsible for both the installation and testing of the high-voltage switches. Part of the modernisation of the switchgear involved switching to carbon dioxide as the insulating gas in the new high-voltage switches. This is a much more environmentally friendly option than previous solutions. Rigorous switch tests ensured that the switches function optimally and can safely regulate the flow of electricity.

The project initially faced some challenges. These included delays in the delivery of the switches and difficulties in coordinating outages because the regional network owner had another project nearby at the same time.

- The date of the outages was changed a few times but OneCo was very flexible and made every effort to get the work done before our peak period," explains Henrik Larsson.

The new switchgear, which was the last part of the modernisation of the station, was completed in autumn 2023 and will now contribute to a more sustainable and reliable electricity supply in Skövde for years to come.
